Entweder dass, oder auch ein Ablenkungsmanöver wegen Dido Harding.

Bei Ian Dunt läuft es ohne weitere Hintergedanken darauf hinaus, dass die Sache das Fass zum Überlaufen gebracht hat und Hancock zu beschädigt war/ist:

At the point that Hancock was photographed kissing Coladangelo, government guidance insisted that people from different households maintain social distancing. This was why those with parents in care homes were still unable to hold them and people attending the funerals of loved ones were forced to grieve alone.

Behind the closed doors of his office, after he poked his head out to make sure no one was coming, Hancock ignored the rules he imposed upon others.

If we had faced another severe Covid wave demanding a reintroduction of the hugging ban, Hancock would have once again had to stand on the podium at Downing Street and command the nation to refrain from embracing one another. And he would have had no standing whatsoever to do that. No-one could have taken him seriously. The hypocrisy emanating from him would have been so strong you could see it shimmer in the air.

The case was comprehensive and overwhelming. Hancock had to go, for reasons of basic ministerial standards and to maintain public confidence in government advice during a pandemic. And yet Johnson refused to sack him. On Friday, he instead accepted Hancock’s apology and said he “considers the matter closed“. It was left to Hancock himself to decide that it was time to go.

Persönlich kann das allgemeine Standing Hancocks in der britischen Öffentlichkeit schwer einschätzen.* Wenn er weit überwiegend bzw. auch unter manchen Tories (Wählern, Abgeordneten, Medien) unbeliebt gewesen sein sollte, dann wäre es auch plausibel, dass er einfach nur ausgetauscht wurde. Zusätzlich müsste sich dies nicht völlig mit der Annahme widersprechen, dass da noch was kommt. Bei jedem Mist, der während der Corona-Krise in Hancocks Verantwortungsbereich passiert ist und warum auch immer nochmal erörtert werden sollte, lässt sich nun sagen: "Jagut, aber Hancock ist doch zurückgetreten!" Da muss nicht zwingend noch eine ganz unbekannte Leiche auftauchen.

' Ich erinnere mich an zwei nach normalen politischen Standards (von halbwegs mitte-links bis halbwegs mitte-Rechts) wirklich katastrophale Interviews mit Hancock, die nicht nur ich persönlich als wirklich nachteilig empfunden haben kann. Aber in Zeiten der politischen Polarisierung und Tribalisierung kann man dergleichen eben nicht immer ohne weiteres voraussetzen.
