Why the Tory ‘war on woke’ doesn’t travel

Attempts to land blows in the so-called culture war has rendered the Conservative party conference a surreal bubble

If any evidence was needed that “woke” no longer has any meaning, Jake Berry confirmed it. Speaking on the fringes of this year’s Conservative party conference, the northern MP explained why Whitehall officials should return to their desks: “We have to end the civil service ‘woke-ing’ from home. Sorry I mean working from home, but let’s be honest, it often is woke-ing.” 

In the US in recent years the term “woke” has come to signify that a person has an awareness of racial inequality. It has jumped across the Atlantic and is wielded by the British right to decry the excesses of the left. Woke is now routinely used by this group to critique everything, from foreign and health policy to religion.

In the bijou conference hall and sweaty bars of this year’s Tory bash in Manchester, it has been the signal to rally the troops for bangs of approval on a hard surface. When Oliver Dowden, chair of the party, spoke of “woke aggression” and warned Labour “has got woke running through it like a stick of Brighton rock”, he was greeted with vigorous cheers and applause.

This focus, at the expense of actual policies, has furthered the sense that this year’s Tory gathering is in a surreal bubble. Outside, the country is struggling to fill up cars and fearing that there may not be enough pumpkins for Halloween or turkeys for Christmas — few are occupied with the issues that make up the so-called culture war.
